A new form of “street-art” seems to be quite succesfull in France. They smeared a lot of paint over a number of adverts in the streets under the name Robert Johnson.

The final result of this was that the city of Marseille decided to cut down the number of billboards from 5.5 thousand to 3.5 thousand. A remarkable fact!

I do not wish to promote these actions as you kow – I am actually quite sceptical about it. But the fact that it made politicians realize that there is too much advertisement in the streets is something renarkable.

That can only happen in France, where there is a huge history of strikes and public anger which resulted in some changes (guillotine anyone?).

View newspaper article in Dutch.

For Dutch people interested in a recent analysis of how advertisement influences the society, check out this documentary.

From the site:

Books recommended by Verbrugge:

Aristoteles – Ethica Nicomachea
MacIntyre – After Virtue
Hegel – Grundlinien der Philosophie des Rechts
Heidegger – Die Frage nach der Technik
Manuell Castells – The information Age
Robert Bly – The sibling society
Erich Fromm – Escape from Freedom
Hannah Arendt – The human condition
Gabriėl van den Brink – Geweld als Uitdaging
Paul van Tongeren – Deugdethiek

Check out the Dutch newspaper Trouw for an article on the emergence of more and more street-art.
There is also an exposition in Rotterdam and some sites. Don’t believe the hype!
Read it.
